Mother Church or Collegiate Church of the Assumption

Cultural religious site

The Mother Church of Galatone was built between 1591 and 1595 by Giovanni M. Tarantino and Scipione Fanuli. The façade in Carparo stone is divided into three orders. The interior has a Latin cross shape, with four chapels on either side and two in the transept. Amongst the paintings decorating the altar most notable are the Immaculate Conception of 1722, the Crucifixion by Donato Antonio D’Orlando and the one representing Saint Sebastian by Mattia Preti; the latter hangs in the Chapel to the right of the high altar. The Chapel also contains precious relics. The altar is dominated by a valuable XVII century wooden Christ. In the Parish archives are stored inventories, obituaries, scrolls and Greek manuscripts of outstanding value including the “Galatonese Code”.
