Antigonea

Cultural Site

Antigonea lies on an elongated hill ca. 600m above sea level, protected on its east side by steep slopes leading to a small valley, while the western and southern slopes are more accesible. The northern part of the site is the highest part of the ancient city having served as the city’s citadel, is occupied by the ruins of the church of St. Michael. The length of the fortification wall of Antigonea is estimated to ca. 4km and must have encompased a surface of ca. 35 hectares. The panoramic views over the Drino river valley are outstanding and one can see the World Heritage City of Gjirokastra opposite from Antigonea.
