Ancient post station

Historical and artistic heritage

Built in the second half of the century XVI on a pre-existing Roman mansio (station of rest), the Old Station of Ponte di Bovino is located along one of the strategic consular roads to the Ancient Rome, la Minucia, which maintained its importance even in the Middle Ages.

Since the establishment of the state-regulated postal service, it has been one of the most important post stations. The king of Naples in the ‘700 had destined it to seat the Procacci of Foggia and Lecce, for whose safety five armed guards had been assigned.
